Highlighting barriers to fish migration
Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has used Esri’s ArcGIS platform to map over 73,000 potential and actual obstacles to fish migration under the National Barriers Programme. Through its GIS-led approach, the organisation can now identify the barriers that are most harmful to fish species, ease fish passage in the most beneficial locations and engage effectively with stakeholders and communities.
We can now be sure that we are putting funding in the areas where we can make the biggest difference, based on the best science that we have available at the time.
ArcGIS StoryMaps helps us to explain the challenges for migrating fish species and get the public onboard.
This project is gold standard, so we now hope to replicate our GIS-led approach in more future projects.
