After putting out an appeal for help within Grow Remote’s ‘meitheal’ remote working community, Harron was approached by one of Esri Ireland’s remote employees who introduced him to geographic information system (GIS) technology. Harron recalls, “Inside five minutes, the Esri Ireland consultant created a mock-up of what the map could look like and showed me what Esri’s ArcGIS platform could do. Was this what I had in mind? 100% - yes it was.”
Grow Remote spent some time finding out more about GIS and investigating other GIS providers, but soon established that Esri Ireland offered the most appropriate technology for creating a first-of-its-kind Map of Remote.
Having a dedicated Esri Ireland consultant was ideal. He configured a prototype solution for Grow Remote and then worked with the organisation to customise and develop it, as well as pass on GIS know-how and skills to Harron. “We wouldn’t be where we are now without Esri Ireland,” Harron concedes. “When I had an idea, the consultant from Esri Ireland shared his product knowledge and showed me the best way to make it happen, saving me hours of effort. Honestly, the consultant’s help was invaluable and instrumental to our success.”
Configured with ArcGIS Online, the Map of Remote is available to the public showing the towns or villages where people work remotely (but keeps individuals’ exact addresses confidential). When people click on the map they can then access details of the employer that provides remote working opportunities. An integrated survey, built with ArcGIS Survey123, allows remote workers to upload details about their remote jobs and employers, and all the data is added instantly to the map in real-time, with no manual intervention. In this way, the Map of Remote is constantly expanding, providing an increasingly rich and accurate view of the extent and locations of remote working across Ireland.
In the near future, Grow Remote plans to use ArcGIS StoryMaps to communicate its mission and achievements to a wider audience, in an engaging, visual format. “StoryMaps provide a really powerful way for us to demonstrate the impact of our work,” Harron explains. “They will show where in the country we have delivered courses and events, supported remote workers and had positive engagements with employers.”
