Environment Protection Agency

2006-02-12

ESRI Ireland has successfully completed a major evaluation of internet technology by the Environment Protection Agency. The Agency assessed a number of competing vendors against a comprehensive set of functional and “open standards” criteria and has now selected the ESRI ArcGIS 9 suite as its preferred technology platform for delivery of Internet applications.

The Agency was already a user of ESRI desktop technology and had recently completed a project to make its spatial data available internally using ArcSDE and ArcIMS. As a focal point for geospatial data becoming available under the Water Framework directive and other environmental data the Agency was keen to begin to make standards based geospatial data available in the Internet using the OGC WMS, WFS WCS and GML standards.

A key consideration for the Agency was that it should be able to provide “open standards” geospatial web services to a diverse set of stakeholders regardless of what technical platform it used internally. ESRI Ireland was able to satisfy the Agency that the ArcGIS 9 platform provided the open standards based solution they required whilst protecting their existing investments in technology, training and skills.
