About this Map
This Interactive Map demonstrates using the ArcGIS Viewer for Flex in an example configuration suitable for a Local Authority.
The ArcGIS Viewer for Flex is a "rich internet aplication" built by Esri. The Viewer runs in the Adobe Flash Player on the Client browser. The Flash Player enables us to build applications which have a very interactive user interface. This gives a similar User expereince to a desktop application. The ArcGIS Viewer for Flex is an excellent starting point for organisations wishing to deploy sophisticated browser based GIS. It's especially relevant for Intranet deployments where Users can be given instruction in using its advanced functionality.
The Viewer is licenced as Open Source under the Apache 2.0 Licence. The source code can be downloaded from GitHub. If you are not a developer you can download a ready to go viewer from here. It is configured by editing simple XML files, a process fully described in the download. The Viewer is also extensible programatically using the Adobe Flash Builder via a documented framework. If you extend the Viewer by creating your own Widgets you can share them with the community via our Widget Gallery where you may also avail of Widgets previoulsy shared by others.
This particular instance of the Veiwer presents a range of operational information, typical of a Local Authority, including environmental services, planning, zoning, water & drainage infrastructure. These "operational layers" are streamed into the Viewer from a series of back end ArcGIS Server web services. The "reference layers", mapping and areial photography are streamed into the Viewer from the OSi Map Genie REST web service. The Viewer accesses this particular web service to retrieve its cached map tiles enabling us to achieve very high performance. This architecture makes the Viewer very scalable, either it can support many Users or run on relatively modest hardware. This viewer is runing on an Amazon EC2 Small Instance.
