Why not just use KML and the Google Maps API?

If your data is low volume and not terribly complex, KML and the Google Maps API would be a good choice. However sometimes websites which need to display large volume complex spatial information can struggle using KML alone. ArcGIS Server can render this complex information server side and provision it as a web service to ActiView for Google Maps thus maintaining the performance normally associated with Google Maps itself.

How do I prepare the information to be mashed up with Google Maps?

You can author views of your business data using ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView) by editing or import, symbolize that data using a comprehensive set of symbolisation options, label the data and determine at what scales it will be visible. The resulting project document or .MXD can then simply be published to an ArcGIS Server instance using the ArcGIS Desktop Publishing Toolbar.
