Department of Environment Heritage & Local Government

Industry

Environmental Management

The Client

The Department of Environment, Heritage & Local Government is unique among Irish Departments of State in the way that its programmes and activities impinge on the lives of every citizen in the State.

The Challenge

The Department realised that to derive maximum benefit from the application of GI it needed a clear vision and strategic approach to GI implementation.

Solution

To meet the Department's ambitious strategy to provide external public facing access to it's spatial data, a dedicated development team was put together to deliver online access and data download facilities to external stakeholders and the public.

Benefits

The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government's progress to date has clearly demonstrated that the Irish Government can improve service and reduce costs through the effective and efficient use of GIS.

Summary

The benefits of this clearly defined GI Strategy have now been realised - Productivity and quality have been improved within the National Monuments Business Unit by the adoption of a GIS centric workdlow that supports user requirements; the provision of online metadata and spatial data services have greatly reduced the overhead of servicing requests from external stakeholders and have also improved the user experience for the public.

A culture of GI usage has been fostered which enhances access to information and evidence based decision making within the department; they have been able to anticipate and largely meet its obligations under the INSPIRE Directive and finally the department has been able to react rapidly to the requirement to provide cross compliance information.

Client Testimonial

"If you took GIS out, the whole thing would collapse. GIS underpins everything that we do."
