Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources

Industry

Communications, Energy, Natural Resources

The Client

The Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources has a compliment of over 800 staff, deployed in 24 administrative and technical divisions.

The Challenge

The Department identified 17 different services that the Department delivered to citizens and many of these services contained a common spatial element. Recognising this common need the department decided to implement a corporate data model that included GIS.

Solution

Esri Ireland, working with the Department designed and implemented a bespoke GIS environment to meet the needs of it's various business units.

Benefits

The data was presented to all civil servants in the department via a Map Service. The result of this meant that if someone applies for a mining license, it is immediately clear where the site is, if it clashes with an aquaculture license, if its inside a national park or within 200 metres of a national monument.

Summary

The Department is spread geographically through a large number of separate offices. Approximately 620 staff are based in Dublin, some 20 in Castlebar, and 160 are at other regional locations.  The Department has a large number of staff who are expected to regularly work in the field such as Fishery Inspectors, Coast Guard and other technical staff.   It identified  17 different services delivered to citizens and many of these services contained a common spatial element.

Recognising this common need the department decided to implement a corporate data model that included GIS. An intranet map browser was developed which enables the department's staff access the spatial database to visualise map based information.  Certain aspects of the spatial database have also been made public via the Department's web site using the same intranet map browser.
