For IT Managers

ArcGIS is a comprehensive integrated system for working with Geographic Information. It offers a secure, scalable, performant and functionally comprehensive platform deployed across desktop, web, mobile and online channels.

ArcGIS is supported on Windows, Solaris and Linux platforms, it can be deployed on public Cloud infrastructures and can take advantage of virtualisation using VMWare, Hyper-V and Citrix. ArcGIS can use spatial data from a variety of sources incliding Oracle, SQL Server, PostGreSQL, Informix and DB2 as well as a wide range of file based sources.

ArcGIS is engineered as a Services Orientated Architecture (SOA) platform according to IT best practices and using Open Standards.

Key GIS Technology Topics:

  • Open Source : Esri is committed to supporting the best open source technology with our products. Esri consumes open source solutions in our software development cycle, and we support developers with extending the ArcGIS platform using open source tools. Read our blog on this Topic.
  • Cloud Computing : Cloud infrastructures offer a means to quickly mobilize GIS projects with minimal capital expenditure. ArcGIS is supported with machine images on the Amazon Web Service platform.
  • Virtualization: For those running thier own infrastructure virtualisation can offer distinct benefits. Although it is a compute intensive application ArcGIS is supported in a variety of virtualisation scenarios. Read more in our White Paper (.PDF).
  • Open Standards : To promote interoperability Open data and Open Government it is essential to support Open Standards. Esri actively promote open standards, we use them across our products and we participate actively in thier development.
  • Web Applications : Most GIS Users now want to interact with Web based GIS systems on thier Intranet or over the public Internet. ArcGIS provides a set of out of the box configurable Web Applications which can be deployed without developer intervention.
  • Web Services : ArcGIS Server is a powerful middle tier engine on which to build a GIS Services Orientated Architecture (SOA). An SOA can provision web services to desktop, web, mobile and online channels and support collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Mobile Support : It's in the nature of most organisations that use GIS that thier assets and personnel are geographically distributed. ArcGIS Server Mobile on smartphone and Windows CE technology can extend the reach of your GIS into the field.
