Donegal County Council Choose ESRI Ireland to further GIS Strategy

Over the last number of years Donegal County Council has endeavoured to bring services closer to local communities with the opening of Public Service Centres in Dungloe, Donegal Town, Carndonagh, Letterkenny and Milford. Most Council services are now provided through each of these Centres representing a significant improvement in quality and convenience for customers. Nowadays citizens want to be able to access information in a quick, easy and flexible way. Many of the operational activities of Local Authorities are inherently spatial - services are delivered “somewhere” and the location element is now seen as critical to the efficient delivery of service.

In line is the recent announcement by the Council to work with ESRI Ireland in order to drive forward with their GIS Strategy. Together Donegal & ESRI Ireland will collaborate to re-develop their web presence taking advantage of the newer Web2.0 style technologies now available. This will help promote greater interaction with the public and improvement of its business processes.

The Council needed a modern flexible web mapping architecture that can do this efficiently – In the future, interactive maps will be a fundamental aspect of Donegal County Council’s external web presence whereby members of the public can easily access and digest large amounts of information presented to them in an intuitive manner.

Donegal County Council intend to make extensive use of GIS within their “back office” functions - Large amounts of spatial information is being collected and maintained to share internally across the Intranet and with the public, via Internet based systems.
